Principles & Practice
A basic short course for all those involved in lifting and
handling.
The course can be completed in 2 hours, although 3 hours allows for a
more thorough examination of the issues involved, including practice.
Workers will learn about:
- What their responsibilities are
under the Manual Handling Regulations
- The structure and function of the
spine
- Muscular work
- Using good lifting techniques
Manual Handling Risk Assessor Training
The relevant 1992 Regulations require that employers make assessments of their work activities where there is a risk of injury.
All manual handling activities should be considered to identify where risks might exist and enable risk reduction measures to be put in place.
This course can be completed in one day
and would be ideal for those requiring refresher training. However,
for those new to manual handling risk assessment, two days allows for a more thorough explanation of the
issues, and more practice at carrying out assessments. On the two day
course, attendees will also take a written and practical test leading
to certification of competency.
In addition to the basic course
details outlined above, assessors will learn about:
- Roles and responsibilities under
relevant health & safety
legislation, including specific details of the Manual Handling Regulations 1992, and as amended in 2002
- How to collect information and
assess risks arising from manual handling
- How to draw valid and reliable
conclusions
- How to reduce risk by implementing
relevant control measures
- How to complete assessment forms
- How to manage the assessment
process
Manual Handling Train the Trainer
This course can be completed in two
days, although three days allows for a more thorough explanation of
the issues, and more practical exercises.
The two day course would be ideal for those
who will carry out basic manual handling training. A three day course
would be more suited to those who will also be involved in carrying out risk
assessment or carrying out training in risk assessment
techniques.
All attendees will learn the same as for
the risk assessor training course above, and in addition:
- How to develop effective
presentation skills
- How to deal with people
- How to put an effective course
together and which formats to use
All attendees will be asked to put
together a short presentation demonstrating their knowledge of manual
handling and
presentation skills.
On the three day course, further
practice assessments will be carried out and attendees will be asked to take a short written
test. Upon successful completion of the practical elements and the
written test, a
competence certificate will be issued.
